Sailing Destinations: The Best Places to Sail in Northern Florida.

Updated: Nov 6

If you're looking for amazing sailing destinations in Northern Florida, you're in luck. There are a number of beautiful and exciting sailing destinations in this region, from tranquil rivers to open water adventures. Here are some of the best places to sail in Northern Florida:

Nearest to Tallahassee is the Apalachee Bay which is best accessed using the boat Ramp at Shell Point, then you have to go out a channel to the deeper water of Apalachee Bay. An out board motor would be helpful in the channel if the wind and or tide are against you. Small light weight boats like beach catamarans, sunfish or laser may be launched from the beach at shell point, instead of the boat ramp.

Also near Tallahassee is Lake Bradford where the FSU Sailing team practices aka the Rez. Make sure the “Rez” is open before you go. It is not open all year round. Lake sailing can be challenging as the winds can be irregular compared to sailing on the Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.

St. George Island. Located in the Gulf of Mexico, St. George Island offers stunning white sand beaches and clear blue waters, as well as easy access to the Apalachicola Bay and river systems.

St. Marks River. This winding river offers a peaceful and picturesque sailing experience, with plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, and wildlife watching. If you launch in St Marks it will take you at least 2 hours to reach Apalachee Bay (Gulf of Mexico). You could sail most of the way but at some point you will probably need to turn on the motor. Launching from Shell Point will get you to Apalachee Bay much faster, but not as scenic.

Wakulla Springs. This crystal-clear spring is one of the largest in the world, and offers an incredible kayak, canoe or SUP experience. You can explore the spring and its surroundings, including the mouth of the underwater caves and abundant wildlife. You can go way into the caves if you have scuba tanks, but that is very dangerous. Every year a couple divers get lost in the caves and run out of air, so it is best to just stick to mask, fins and snorkel.
